The Berman Center is an 8,500 square foot women’s wellness center treating depression and sexual dysfunction with psychological therapy and physical therapy such as yoga and pilates.

The design embraces the many dualities women are confronted with, such as mother to worker and feminist to feminine, to create a series of physical and mental juxtapositions. The main waiting area functions as a space where a woman can sit in relative privacy through the use of veils and screens while also functioning as a gallery to showcase local women artists. The minimal yet “earthy” materials selected also describe this concept in that the wood-clad building core, whose appearance is that of a solid box is immediately juxtaposed to the diaphanous material used to screen the therapy and exam rooms. It is through this constant contrast that the space finds its unity.
